- The cables — the cable from the dish to the router, plus the router's power cable.
- The base — a small kickstand that lets the dish sit upright on the ground or a flat surface for testing.
The base is fine for a quick test, but for a permanent install you'll usually want a proper mount (more on that below). Have your phone ready too — you'll need the free Starlink app from the App Store or Google Play.
Step 1 — Find a spot with a clear view of the sky
This is the single most important step. Starlink needs an unobstructed view of the sky — trees, walls, water tanks and taller buildings all block the signal and cause drop-outs. Open the Starlink app and use the built-in obstruction check: point your phone around the sky and it maps anything in the way, then tells you whether the spot is good. Test a few positions before committing. In many Nigerian compounds the ground has trees or a neighbouring storey building in the way — which is exactly why the dish so often ends up on the roof.
Step 2 — Choose your mount
Once you know where the sky is clearest, pick how the dish will be held there:
- Ground / base mount — simplest, for a bungalow or open compound with clear sky at ground level.
- Roof mount — the common choice when trees or fences block the ground.
- Pole mount — lifts the dish above obstructions; ideal when something nearby is just a bit too tall.
- Wall mount — bolts to a wall or the side of the building where the roofline is awkward.
Storey buildings and homes hemmed in by taller neighbours almost always need a pole or roof mount to raise the dish clear of everything around it. Getting the height right here prevents the intermittent freezing that comes from a partly blocked view.
Step 3 — Run the cable neatly and weatherproof the entry
Route the cable from the dish down to where the router will sit, keeping it tidy and secured with clips so it doesn't flap in the wind or get snagged. Where the cable passes through a wall or window frame, seal the entry point so rain can't follow it inside — Nigeria's rainy-season downpours are unforgiving on a sloppy entry. Leave a small drip loop before the entry so water runs off rather than tracking indoors.
Step 4 — Connect power and the router
Plug the dish cable into the router, then power the router. It will boot, the dish will orient itself and begin searching for satellites — give it a few minutes on first start-up.
Here's the Nigerian reality worth planning for: your internet is only as steady as your power. Pair the router with an inverter or UPS so Starlink stays on through NEPA outages and generator changeovers. It draws modest power, so even a small backup keeps you connected when the grid drops — which is often the whole point of getting Starlink in the first place.
Step 5 — Set up the app and your Wi-Fi
Back in the Starlink app, follow the setup prompts to bring the connection online. Then name your Wi-Fi network and set a strong password so it's yours and secure. The app also shows connection health, outages and obstruction warnings — handy for confirming your placement is clean.
For a big home or a multi-room office, one router may not cover everywhere. You can extend coverage with a mesh node or by placing the router centrally, so bedrooms and back rooms get the same strong signal as the living room.
